I am participating in my church's Alternative Gift Fair this Sunday, November 15 so I decided to do a blog painting of the church like I did for Good Shepherd. 20% of the final bid price will go to the Alternative gift fair for mission projects. This one is bigger than most of my blog paintings, on canvas, not panel and the 1 1/2" edges of the canvas are painted with the image wrapping around. And the painting looks better in person than my photo of it! It is nice to be able to use my "artistic license" by choosing to not paint in the huge poles, traffic lights and signs, constant car traffic, etc. on the corner of Park and Post!

"The Church of the Good Shepherd"
SOLD 6 x 8 oil on panel
My show for the Riverside Fine Arts Association in Craig Hall at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1100 Stockton Street will be on display through November 19. The 11 originals and 7 prints and about 15 blog paintings are beautifully displayed and worth a viewing if I do say so myself! If you would like to view them call RFA at 389-6222, their office is in the church and someone would be glad to show you Monday through Thursday, 9 am -4 pm and of course during Sunday church services! (20% of any sales or print orders will benefit RFA.) The RFA concert Thursday night with the King's Singers was terrific, I look forward to attending more concerts in their Fall series.

"Guana Marsh" and Jane Gray Gallery Show
SOLD 4 1/2" x 18" oil on panel (Click on the image to see it larger)
This August I spent a week at a friend's condo in South Ponte Vedra and was able to gather some potential subject matter with Guana Preserve being right nearby. This painting is looking south from the dam parking by Guana Lake. It is longer than some PADs. I will paint and post PADs more randomly and guess it is more of a painting that takes just a day rather than paintings painted every weekday so my blog is now titled "A Painting in a Day".
The above painting, "Field of Yellow", is a watercolor on paper 30" x 30" I recently completed for a show at the Jane Gray Gallery, located at 643 Edison Ave, right by BCBS Tower, just off Riverside Avenue. The opening is this Friday night, Sept. 25, from 6 - 9 pm, come by if you can. The show is titled "Jane(s): Contemporary Female Perspectives", with 12 female artists presenting in various media.

Here are two commissioned PADS, the first one is a field of sunflowers and wildflowers my aunt and uncle in Wilmington grow on their farm. The second piece is for a doberman pinscher loving friend.
I've been busy working on a large watercolor for a show coming up ...and some home improvement projects, maybe I will include a photo or two in my next posting, a for sale PAD.
Enjoy!

"Tour de France Sunflowers" and New Summertime Goals
SOLD 3 3/4" x 10" oil on panel
Here is a quick PAD of my favorite sporting event to watch, the Tour de France. Enjoy.
It seems I am getting away from the Painting a Day concept to "a painting in a day" on occasion. I am working mainly on bigger work (and playing some this summer) so will only post about once a week while also showing my larger work as it progresses. (PAD burn out might have something to do with it too!)

"From the Biltmore Estate"
SOLD 6" x 8" oil on panel
After visiting the beach, now I am yearning for the mountains. Maybe I will get up there and post a few PADs from NC this summer! In the meantime, I dug up some old photos to use as a reference from the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, my father's home town, in memory of my dad this Father's Day weekend. (How do you like this landscape?)
I am participating in the Riverside Arts Market this Saturday, June 20 in the very middle row with my black tent. Also I am excited that "Sweet Grass Dairy" will be there so I can buy some more of their delicious award winning artisan cow and goat cheese from their organic dairy farm in South GA. Worth the trip to RAM just for the cheese!

"Tulips in Sunlight"
SOLD 4 3/4" x 10" oil on panel
I am officially backing off the five (or four...) day a week PAD schedule (whew!) and will aim to post three quality "A Painting a Day" blog paintings a week. The painting goes quickly but deciding what to paint does not always go so fast and doing it every day is keeping me from spending as much time as I should on my larger work. I do plan on posting an image of any new large work whenever completed along with a PAD posting. I've enjoyed the challenge of painting well over 100 since starting this in mid November with more than three fourths of them SOLD!

Still in a beach frame of mind, I decided to paint a scene from my weekend at the ocean. Tucker Hawthorne, here, loves to swim after throw toys.

"Sunkist Lemons"
SOLD 6" x 8 oil on panel
This is one of those still lifes where I crop out a small section to paint out of a much larger set up. I have several view finders in different sizes to help me crop.
(I'm heading to the beach Friday, I will be back painting next week. Maybe I'll get some new subject matter!))

"Queen Conch"
AVAILABLE, $100, email me to purchase, kartstark@bellsouth.net 7" x 7" oil on panel
I've painted this shell before and sometimes I find it is a good exercise to revisit a subject. My intention was to paint it fast with loose brushstrokes. I used a #8 flat brush only. It was fun to paint.

"Bolles Hall"
SOLD 6" x 8" oil on panel
I unintentionally took a break from PAD painting for the past ten days. I was kidsitting three great active boys for my good friend Susan Brodeur and with other projects and a show at First Guaranty bank last week I just didn't paint and post!
This is Bolles Hall at the Bolles School in Jacksonville which was originally built as the San Jose Hotel in the early 20's.
This Thursday I am participating in a fundraising event, "Taste of Talent" benefiting the Riverside Fine Arts Association for a night of live music, food and wine from local restaurants and ... local art! The artists are me, Jim Draper, Tom Hager, Jesse Wright, John Bunker, Billie McCray, Emmy Cervany, Nadine Terk, Bunny Morgan, David Lauderdale, Paul Riley, Alison Watson, Barre Barrett and Danile Wynn. The musicians are Bella Voce Caberet, Sue Carmichael, harp, Andy Clarke, organ, Rodney Cleveland, organ, Nick Curry, cello, Philip Pan, violin, Riverside Guitar Quartet, Gary and Marilyn Smart, piano/soprano, Tony Smotherman, guitar, Randy Tinnin, trumpet, Von Barlow Jazz Trio, Scott Watkins, piano and Kyle Wehner, violin, all performed on multiple stages in the courtyard, sanctuary and parish hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd. "Little Girl in Gramma's Garden" - My 100th Blog Painting!
NFS 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" oil on panel
To celebrate my 100th (!!!) PAD blog painting I thought I would paint a 'self-portrait' of sorts. For years I've been wanting to paint from this old photograph of me standing in my grandmother's flower garden in Wilmington, NC. Like my knobby knees?!?
I started this PAD blog in mid November as a way to help me get through this tough economy. I've sold over two thirds of them. Thanks everyone!
I hope you continue to enjoy them as I go for another 100!

Sometimes it gets frustrating to start and finish a painting in one day so I decided to paint this skyline as a triptych and post photos of it's progression as I work on it today/Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. "Riverside Arts Market
No PAD painting painted Friday, too busy getting ready for the Riverside Arts Market on Saturday (today). Those of you in the North Florida area come visit me there and support a wonderful new venue/event for our area. It is from 10 am - 4 pm every Saturday under the Fuller Warren Bridge on the northbank, where I-95 goes over the St. Johns River, on Riverside Ave, between the Fidelity Buildings and the Red Cross/Cummer Museum. I suggest parking at the Y and walking down the Northbank Riverwalk to get there. Or ride your bike, there is a bike valet service in the Riverside Ave/Fidelity corner. My booth is 406, one row away from the farmer's market row, just about in the middle towards Riverside Ave. I heard 100 new artist applied on Monday to participate, they must have scoped it out the previous Saturday. I will be there next Saturday as well and then go to a more two Saturdays a month schedule. I look forward to seeing you there. I have some new paintings and prints for my display!
I counted (but need to doublecheck) and I've painted 91 PADs since mid-February, SOLD 60, have 31 available and have 107 people following by email subscription (and growing!) Thanks! It has been a great marketing tool, a very challenging experience and a help for me monetarily during these tough economic times for everyone.
